The Soul of the City Receives the Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Springfield: The Author, 1913. "This tract has been printed by the designer expressly for gratuitous distribution in Springfield, Illinois."

Lindsay's illustrations for this poem show heavenly censers swinging over buildings in Springfield, "hieroglyphs of the body and soul of the place," in this instance the Illinois Statehouse. According to Lindsay, "The New State House stands, in this book, as the representative of that handful of legislators.... destined to triumphant battle for a Socialist Illinois."
