Illinois Government Information
Virtually all of the state agencies also have websites and most are disseminating information that way.
- FirstGov - Can use the federal government's official search engine for a specific state or all 50 states. Must do an Advanced Search and modify the Search in: box.
- Illinois Government Information - a.k.a. Find-It Illinois! Search engine specifically for IL state websites
- State of Illinois Agencies - links to IL state agencies' websites
Print Publications
If you need historical information, or the publication is something you'd prefer to read in print, try:
- PrairieCat, UIS - the library book catalog for UIS holdings, or
- Illinois State Library - the State Library is the disseminator of state government publications, so they will definitely have a copy. The only drawback is that they have not cataloged all of their older materials.
Government Publications from the Other 49 States
Just like Illinois, every state has an official website. The URL would be:
http://www.state.xx.us
with xx being the 2-digit postal code abbreviation for the state. Even if the state has a different URL, using the above almost always will automatically be redirected to the new one.
And most states have their own search engine for locating state-level information, which should be prominent on the website. It may not be labeled anything beyond a generic search box though.
And the federal governments official search engine FirstGov can be used to search for a specific state or all 50 states. Must do an Advanced Search and modify the Search in: box.
Print publications from other states would have to be Interlibrary Loaned. Most large academic libraries collect their state publications and catalog them, so they may be found in:
- WorldCat - Over 49 million records for books, web resources, and other material from libraries worldwide. Check to see who has the item by clicking on Libraries Worldwide. If none of the PrairieCat libraries have it, then request it by clicking on the blue ILL button at the top of the screen. See Help with WorldCat for more information.
