Where are the books?
The general collection books are located on Level 4. You will need to use the library catalog, nicknamed PrairieCat, to see what we have, the call number and availability.
Does the library have any eBooks?
Yes! With the database NetLibrary you have access to thousands of recent titles in business, computer science, health, and general reference. NetLibrary also offers access to over 3,500 classic public domain books. You may read the books online, but to read them offline, you must check out the book and use netLibrary's ebook reader (PC only), available for downloading.
How can I get a book that isn't available at UIS?
Search PrairieCat to see if the book is available at UIS. If not, select the I-Share Catalog button on the top of the screen and re-do your search. If you find the book available at another library, click on the Request button on the top of the screen.
- Choose Univ. of Illinois-Springfield as your Home Library.
- Type in your Library Borrower ID number (the number beginning with 21412 on your I-Card student identification) and your last name, then click the Login button.
- Just click the OK button on the next screen.
- Then the request form will appear. You must type in your Library ID Number again.
- While the system defaults to sending the book to the UIS Library, you may choose which library you wish to send the requested book.
If the book is not found in PrairieCat, switch to WorldCat (a FirstSearch database) and run a search. Select desired item. Click on the ILL button at the top of the screen and fill out the form presented. (You will need the NetID and password to access FirstSearch databases.)
In either case, books will take from 1 to 3 weeks to reach the library.
How do I find out if the library has a particular journal, magazine, or newspaper?
Search the Journals @ UIS to see if your periodical is
- available full text, or
- owned in print or microfilm by us -- note the call number!
Type in the name of the journal, magazine or newspaper and click the Search button.
The Journals @ UIS will list those databases that offer full text access of the particular journal, noted by a date range. Click on the name of the database (usually italicized) to jump to the database, where you will have to redo your search. (I suggest typing in unique words from the title of the article and an author.) Most of the time you will see -->title in the middle of the entry. Click on the word title to jump to a list of issues of the periodical, and from there you can browse the table of contents to find your article.
The UIS periodical holdings are now included as wel. It will say "available in UIS Library" and give you the date range and the call number. You may also use the yellow UIS Periodical Holdings spiral-bound books scattered around the library, or the book catalog PrairieCat.
What if the library doesn't have the journal, magazine, or newspaper I need?
If the periodical is not here, either in full text or hardcopy, then you may request it via Interlibrary Loan (ILL). Fill out the ILL form online, and the article will be mailed to the address indicated. You will be asked for your I-Card number, the one that begins with 21412. Please allow 1-3 weeks for delivery.
Where can I find materials put on reserve?
Electronic Reserves
Electronic Reserves may be accessed through the Blackboard website for your class. Go to UIS Blackboard and login using your NetID to access the class website. (The Username/Password is the same as the one for your UIS email, to register for classes, etc.) Click on the button External Links and then Electronic Reserves to see a list of the online readings. The reserve materials are in PDF format, so you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the materials.
Print Reserves
For physical, print reserves, go to the Circulation Desk, located on Level 2 of the library. To see a list of what your professor has placed on reserve, and the call numbers, click on Course Reserves within PrairieCat, the Library Book Catalog. Reserve materials are either library use only, or they may be checked out for 3 days or 7 days.
Where can I find a master's project or thesis?
All Master's projects are kept in Archives and Special Collections, located on Level 1 in the library. See a list of UIS Projects/Theses by department. The Archives are open 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. If you are unable to get to campus during that time you can call 217-206-6520 and make other arrangements.
