Where do I check out books?
Check out books at the Circulation Desk, located on Level 2 of the library, next to the entrance. You will need to present your I-Card student identification.
- For undergraduates, books circulate for 4 weeks, and you may renew them up to 3 times.
- For graduate students, books circulate for 16 weeks, and you may renew them up to 6 times.
How can I renew my books?
You can either bring your items back to the Circulation Desk
to be renewed, or renew them online in PrairieCat, within
MyAccount.
(See My
Library Account for more information.) Students, staff,
and other borrowers are allowed three renewals. Faculty and
graduate students are allowed six renewals.
My books are overdue; am I going to get a fine?
Patrons are notified by mail when general loan items are
one day overdue. A second reminder is sent after 30 days.
Items more than 60 days overdue are assumed lost and the patron
is billed for replacement costs (minimum of $75.00) plus a
$10.00 processing fee. If the item is returned, the replacement
costs are waived but the patron is still responsible for the
$10.00 processing fee. Items lost or returned damaged will
be subject to a minimum $75.00 replacement charge.
I graduated from UIS (or SSU). Can I get a library card?
Yes! You can obtain a courtesy borrower card by filling out a form available at the Circulation Desk, or you can download it here: Alumni Borrower Card form (PDF version). This card will allow you to check out locally owned items only. It will not give you Universal Borrowing or Interlibrary Loan privileges.
What kinds of items can I borrow from the library?
Students can borrow all library materials except: periodicals,
media equipment, software, films, reference materials,
and some government documents. Faculty may check out films and media equipment.
I just checked out some books. How long can I use them?
General loan items circulate for four weeks to undergraduate students, and sixteen weeks to graduate/doctoral students, faculty, and staff. Most items can be renewed
three times for students or staff and six times for faculty or graduate students.
My professor wants me to look at a Master's project done
by an earlier student in my department. Where can I find it?
All Master's projects are kept in Archives
and Special Collections, located on Level 1 in the library.
The Archives are open 9 to 5 Monday through Friday. If you
are unable to get to campus during that time you can call
217-206-6520 and make other arrangements.
