If you live close to one of the 65 I-Share libraries, you may search for books in the I-Share Catalog
and request that the book be sent to whatever library is convenient
for you. (See Requesting
Books in I-Share Catalog for detailed instructions.) This
usually takes about a week.
If you live a reasonable distance
away and are not taking any on-campus classes in Springfield,
the library will mail you books. (Otherwise, you are expected
to come to the library to pick up books.) Contact the Circulation
Department at lib-circ@uis.edu
or call 217-206-6605. Circulation will discuss with you the
best options for delivering books. Possibilities include having
the book delivered to any public or academic library near you
(and saving you return postage), to mailing the book to your
home address. This usually takes about a week, if it is
a book held at the UIS library, or 2 weeks if we have to request
the book from another I-Share library.
If you are sure the book you need isn't in the
I-Share Catalog, then fill out the Interlibrary Loan Form
for Books. You want to always check I-Share first, because
it is a much faster service than Interlibrary Loan.
If you do not have a complete citation for the book, try looking
it up in WorldCat.
This FirstSearch database offers citation and holdings information
for over 49 million records from thousands of libraries around
the world. (If you are willing to travel, click on the link
Libraries that Own Item. Illinois libraries will be listed
first.) Once you locate the book you want, click on the ILL
button at the top of the screen and fill out the form.
If you live a reasonable distance
away and are not taking any on-campus classes in Springfield,
the library will mail you the book. Otherwise, you are expected
to come to the library to pick up the book you requested. Please
indicate in the "Any other information or comments"
field that you are a distance education student, you live a
reasonable distance away, etc. and that you would like the book
mailed to you. Contact the Circulation Department at lib-circ@uis.edu
or call 217-206-6605. Circulation will discuss with you the
best options for delivering books. Possibilities include having
the book delivered to any public or academic library near you
(and saving you return postage), to mailing the book to your
home address. Please allow 1-3 weeks for delivery.
First, you need to determine if the article is available full text in one of our databases, or if the UIS library owns a print or microfilm copy of the journal/magazine/newspaper you need. Go to Journals @ UIS. Type in the name of the journal in the box. This directory will tell you if the library has a physical print subscription to the journal, or has access to it in one of our full text databases. Note: you will need to allow pop-ups from this site to use this database.
If it's available full text in one of our databases, the databases will be listed, along with the date range. Click on the GO button to jump to the particular database, and it will either provide a list of issues, or you will have to perform a keyword sarch to locate your specific article.
For print or microfilm holdings it will give you the call number and the date range. Note the call number and the format for the year you need. (If it doesn't indicate a format, then it's in print, versus microfilm.)
Requesting Articles
- If the UIS library owns the periodical,
and you live a reasonable distance
from campus and are not taking any on-campus classes in Springfield,
then you may request that the library mail you a photocopy
of the article you need. Fill out the Interlibrary
Loan Form for Periodicals, and in the "Any other
information or comments" field, indicate that you are
a distance education student, you live a reasonable distance
away, etc. and that you would like the article mailed to the
address on the form. Please allow 4 days for delivery.
- If the UIS library owns the periodical,
and you reside close to campus or
are taking an on-campus class, you are expected
to come to the library and retrieve the articles you need.
Note the call number for the periodical, and whether the year
you need is in paper or microfilm.
- If the UIS library does not own
the periodical you need, then fill out the Interlibrary
Loan form for periodicals. A photocopy of the article will
be mailed to the address on the form, no matter how close
you live to campus. Please allow 1-3 weeks for delivery.
