Off-Campus Access to Information

Access Databases | What is my NetID? | Help! I still can't get in!

You can access the library's book catalog PrairieCat, and virtually all of the UIS library's databases from any computer connected to the Internet. However, access to the databases is restricted to current students, faculty and staff.

How do I access databases off-campus?

You will need your Network ID (NetID) and password. (This is the same as your UIS e-mail account login and password.) When you click on the link to the database, a window will pop up, similar to this one.

What is my NetID?

When you registered for classes, you were automatically given a UIS NetID account, which acts as your Enterprise ID for Registration, UIS e-mail account, Blackboard account, and method for accessing library databases off-campus. This NetID is printed on your course schedule. The NetID is composed of the first letter of your first name, the first four letters of your last name, and a number (1, 2, 3, etc. depending on how many others have the same combination of letters). So Abraham Lincoln's NetID would be alinc1. (If you started at UIS a couple of years ago, your NetID ends in 01s, 02s, 03s, etc.)

If you have forgotten the password you created, go to http://www.uis.edu/cts/netid/index.htm for information about resetting your password.

Help! I still can't get in!

Some faculty members have reported problems logging in to library databases from off campus. If you are using the VPN client in order to use Outlook to access your UIS e-mail from home, you will need to turn off the VPN client in order to successfully log into the library databases via the proxy server. If you are not seeing the small pop-up window (pictured above) before going to the database, this is an indication that the VPN client is interfering with the proxy server.

If you have problems, contact the UIS Technology Support Center at 217-206-7357 or toll-free 1-877-847-0443, or e-mail TechSupport@uis.edu
