Government Information Online - Terrorism

Logo for GPO Depository Library

A Project of Blackburn College and University of Illinois at Springfield

Note: Many links are using the Government Printing Office's PURLs, or Persistent Uniform Resource Locators, rather than direct links to the federal agencies. This improves the links accuracy, in case the publication was moved to a different URL. However, it does take an extra few seconds to retrieve the website.

Agencies

The federal agencies' websites are good starting points when looking for general information on a relevant topic, or when looking for specific information that you know the agency handles. Virtually all of the websites have a site index or a search engine, if you have difficulty navigating the site.

Central Intelligence Agency - Responsible for collecting intelligence, correlating and evaluating intelligence related to the national security and providing appropriate dissemination of such intelligence, and providing overall direction for and coordination of the collection of national intelligence outside the United States.
Counterterrorism Office - Part of the State Department, charged with coordinating all U.S. Government efforts to improve counterterrorism cooperation with foreign governments and participates in the development, coordination, and implementation of American counterterrorism policy.
Department of Homeland Security - Newest federal department charged with preventing terrorist attacks within the United States, reducing America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimizing the damage from potential attacks and natural disasters. 22 agencies from other departments were merged, including the Coast Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Secret Service, Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly Immigration & Naturalization Service or INS).
Federal Bureau of Investigations - Principal investigative arm of the Justice Department. Upholds the law through the investigation of violations of federal criminal law. Protects the United States from foreign intelligence and terrorist activities. Provides leadership and law enforcement assistance to federal, state, local, and international agencies.
