  The 9/11 Commission Report: Final report of the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks - Full text version of the 9/11 Commission’s Final Report. It provides a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks, including preparedness for and the immediate response to the attacks.   Agriculture Fact Book - 300 page overview of the Agriculture Department and sub-agencies.
  Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives Bureau - Law enforcement agency within the Justice Department. Enforces the Federal laws and regulations relating to alcohol, tobacco products, firearms, explosives, and arson, and protecting the public and reducing violent crime.
  Alternative Fuel News - Newsletter, published four times per year, provides information about Clean Cities projects, designations, and conferences, and is dedicated to publishing the most unbiased and up-to-date information about developments in the alternative fuels industry.
  Amber Waves: The Economics of Food, Farming, Natural Resources, and Rural America - Magazine published five times a year by the Economic Research Service, USDA.
  American FactFinder - Census Bureau's main interface for retrieving demographic and economic data from the American Community Survey, Decennial Census, Economic Census (every 5 years), and their Population Estimates.
  Annual Energy Review - Annual statistics from the Energy Information Administration, on energy reserves, production, consumption, distribution, prices, technology, and related international, economic, and financial matters.
  March 27, 20070">Area Handbooks/Country Studies - 300+ page books that present a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of a particular  country throughout the world and examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors. Around 100 countries are covered, except Canada and Western European countries. The books were originally written between 1988 and 1998.

  Beige Book - or the Summary of Commentary on Current Economic Conditions. Commonly known as the Beige Book, this report is published eight times per year. Each Federal Reserve Bank gathers anecdotal information on current economic conditions in its District through reports from Bank and Branch directors and interviews with key business contacts, economists, market experts, and other sources. The Beige Book summarizes this information by District and sector. You may browse them back to 1970.
  Ben's Guide to U.S. Government for Kids - Provides learning tools for K-12 students, parents, and teachers. These resources will teach how our government works, the use of the primary source materials of GPO Access, and how one can use GPO Access to carry out their civic responsibilities. Also lists other U.S. Government websites developed for kids. Created by the Government Printing Office.
  Bill Summary & Status (1973-present) - Summary of proposed legislation and what happened to it.
  Bills (1989-present) - Introduced legislation from the House of Representatives or the Senate.
  Browse Topics - Selective collection of useful websites on over 150 different topics, from accounting to zip codes. Good place to start if you have a general topic and do not want to be overwhelmed with too many results.
  Budget of the United States (1996-present) - Searchable text of the proposed budget submitted by the President to Congress.
  Business.GOV - "The official business link to the U.S. Government," this portal, managed by the Small Business Administration, offers information aimed at the business community. Access forms, browse information arranged by type of business or by geographical region, as well as information at various stages of the business cycle.

  Career Voyages - Portal by the Department of Labor and the Department of Education to information about in-demand careers and what skills/education is needed.
  Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance - Government-wide compendium of Federal programs which provide assistance or benefits to state and local governments, organizations, and individuals in the form of grants, loans, direct payments, counseling, training, etc. See also Grants.gov for online portal to federal grants.
  Catalog of U.S. Publications (1994-present) - Main source for locating federal publications; if available online, a URL is provided. Created by the Government Printing Office.
  Center for Nutrition Policy & Promotion - Develops and coordinates nutrition policy within the Agriculture Department. Assesses the cost-effectiveness of government sponsored nutrition programs on food consumption, food expenditures, food-related behavior, and nutritional status. Prepares periodic updates on the cost of family food plans and of raising children. Investigates techniques for effective nutrition communication for Americans. Evaluates the Nutrient Content of the U.S. food supply.
  Centers for Disease Control & Prevention - Provides a system of health surveillance to monitor and prevent outbreak of diseases. With the assistance of states and other partners, it guards against international disease transmission, maintains national health statistics and provides for immunization services and supports research into disease and injury prevention.
  Central Intelligence Agency - Responsible for collecting intelligence, correlating and evaluating intelligence related to the national security and providing appropriate dissemination of such intelligence, and providing overall direction for and coordination of the collection of national intelligence outside the United States.
  Census Bureau - Collector and provider of timely, relevant, and quality data about the people and economy of the United States.
  Census of Agriculture - Count of all farms and production for those farms that produced more than $1000 worth of agricultural products. Data compiled for the nation, states and counties every 5 years. Access 2002, 1997, and 1992 censuses.
  Clean Coal Today - Quarterly newsletter on the Clean Coal Technology Compendium - a joint government-industry initiative to test first-of-its-kind coal technology that offers superior environmental performance. May browse all the issues back to 1990.
  Climatological Data Free access from .edu domain computers - NOAA data warehouse of weather information.
  Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) - Administrative rules and regulations of the federal agencies, arranged by subject. For a current but unofficial version, try the e-CFR.
  Commerce Department - Large agency responsible for: promoting job creation, economic growth, sustainable development and improved living standards; strengthening and safeguarding the nation's economic infrastructure; keeping America competitive with cutting-edge science and technology and an unrivaled information base; and providing effective management and stewardship of the nation's resources and assets to ensure sustainable economic opportunities.
  Committee Prints (1997-present) - Draft legislation, situation reports, statistical information, historical information, or legislative analysis. Not every committee print is online.
  Compensation and Working Conditions - Quarterly periodical includes articles, summaries of major studies, and data tables and charts contributed by Bureau of Labor Statistics economists and statisticians and outside scholars. Articles and summaries are descriptive and analytical, covering a range of topics that include wages and benefits, safety and health, and labor-management relations. Data tables provide information about the Employment Cost Index, Employee Benefits Survey, the National Compensation Survey, major work stoppages, and occupational injuries and illnesses and fatalities.
  Condition of Education - Annual publication summarizes important developments and trends in education using the latest available data. The report is an indicator report intended for a general audience of readers who are interested in education. The indicators represent a consensus of professional judgment on the most significant national measures of the condition and progress of education for which accurate data are available.
  Congressional Directory (1995-present) - Who's who in Congress, as well as directories to agencies, members of the press, and foreign embassies.
  Congressional Pictorial Directory (1995-present) - Who's who in Congress with black & white pictures. 
  Congressional Record (1989-present) - Transcript of floor debates and other inserted materials.
  Congressional Reports (1995-present) - Findings of a House or Senate Committee on bills the Committee passed.
  Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports - Browse or keyword search thousands of reports on public policy issues. Congressional Research Service is the research arm of Congress. Their reports are not officially distributed, but many have been put on the Internet by members of Congress or other organizations. University of North Texas Libraries' Government Documents Department has captured the online versions and made them searchable.
  Constitution of the United States: Analysis & Interpretation - Annotated version of the Constitution, with summaries of Supreme Court cases that dealt with constitutional issues.
  Consular Information Sheets - Basic information about travel to a particular country, from the State Department. Includes health conditions, crime, unusual currency or entry requirements, any areas of instability, and the location of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in the country.
  Consumer Price Index - Links to various reports for the Consumer Price Index, the measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services.
  Counterterrorism Office - Part of the State Department, charged with coordinating all U.S. Government efforts to improve counterterrorism cooperation with foreign governments and participates in the development, coordination, and implementation of American counterterrorism policy.
  Country Background Notes - Brief guides provide information on a country's leaders, politics, economy, and relations with the U.S. Written by State Department officials. Each country is usually updated once every couple of years.
  Country Reports on Terrorism - Formerly known as the Patterns of Global Terrorism, is an annual report by the State Department submitted to the Congress on detailed assessments of foreign countries where significant terrorist acts occurred, and countries about which Congress was notified pursuant to the Export Administration Act of 1979 (the so-called terrorism list countries that have repeatedly provided state support for international terrorism).

  Dietary Guidelines for Americans - Cornerstone of Federal nutrition policy and nutrition education activities. They are jointly issued by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services and updated every 5 years. The 6th edition was released in January 2005.
  DisabilityInfo.gov - Portal to government information on civil rights, employment, housing, transportation, and other issues relevant to people with disabilities.
  Digest of Education Statistics - From the National Center for Education Statistics, statistics on education from kindergarten through graduate schools, e.g. number of schools, teachers, enrollments; educational attainment; finances; libraries; and international education.
  DOE Information Bridge - Source to full text and bibliographic records of Energy Department research and development reports in physics, chemistry, materials, biology, environmental sciences, energy technologies, engineering, computer and information science, renewable energy, and other topics. The Information Bridge has a growing collection of over 65,800 full text documents produced and made available by Energy Department's National Laboratories and grantees from 1995 forward.
  Drug Enforcement Administration - Enforces the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and brings to the criminal and civil justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations and principal members of organizations involved in the growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States. Recommends and supports non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit controlled substances on the domestic and international markets. Part of the Justice Department.

  Economic Analysis, Bureau of - Provides the most accurate and relevant GDP and economic accounts data in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  Economic Census - Compiled every 5 years by the Census Bureau, the Economic Census provides a detailed portrait of the economy, from the national to the local level. Covers nearly all of the U.S. economy in its basic collection of establishment statistics. There also are several related programs, including statistics on minority- and women-owned businesses. Can use American FactFinder to access tables of data from 1997 and 2002 Economic Censuses.
  Economic Indicators - Monthly statistical compilation, with data on GDP, wages, prices, interests rates, etc. Published by the House and Senate Joint Economic Committee.
  Economic Report of the President - 300+ page annual report by the President's Council of Economic Advisors summarizing the economy of the past year and offering projections. Includes statistical tables.
  Economic Research Service - Inform and enhance public and private decisionmaking on economic and policy issues related to agriculture, food, natural resources, and rural development.
  Economic Statistics Briefing Room - Latest economic statistics from a variety of federal agencies from one site.
  Education Department - Responsibilities are: providing national leadership and partnerships to address critical issues in American education; serving as a national clearinghouse of good ideas; helping families pay for college; helping local communities and schools meet the most pressing needs of their students; preparing students for employment in a changing economy; and ensuring nondiscrimination by recipients of federal education funds.
  Education Statistics Quarterly - Gives a comprehensive overview of work done across all parts of the National Center for Education Statistics. Each issue includes short publications, summaries, and descriptions that cover all publications and data products released during a 3-month period.
  EM State Fact Sheets - Information about the Energy Department Office of Environmental Management's activities in each state. Choose a state, either from the image map or the search box at the bottom.
  Emerging Infectious Diseases - Peer-reviewed journal, issued 6 times a year, on tracking and analyzing disease trends.
  Energy Citations Database - Bibliographic citations to over 2 million energy-related articles, books, conference papers, etc. from 1948 to the present. Courtesy of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI).

  Envirofacts Data Warehouse - Retrieve environmental information from EPA databases on air, radiation, waste, water, toxics, etc. Search by location, or jump to a particular database.
  Environmental Health Perspectives - Monthly peer-reviewed journal for the latest environmental health research and information on topics ranging from molecular biology, ecology, and atmospheric physics to regulatory and public policy news and comment. Browse or search articles back to 1972.
  Environmental Protection Agency - Charged to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment--air, water, and land--upon which life depends.
  Equal Employment Opportunity Commission - Charged with eradicating employment discrimination at the workplace. Interprets employment discrimination laws, monitors the federal sector employment discrimination program, provides funding and support to state and local Fair Employment Practices Agencies (FEPAs), and sponsors outreach and technical assistance programs.
  ERIC - World's largest source of education information, with more than 1 million abstracts of documents and journal articles on education research and practice. 1966-present and updated monthly. Citations and abstracts only for journal articles, but over 100,000 full text ERIC documents available (1993-present).

  FDA Consumer - Official magazine of the Food and Drug Administration, published 6 times a year. FDA Consumer offers you a wealth of new and in-depth information on how to get healthy and stay healthy. Reports on current FDA activities to ensure that the products the agency regulates--food, human and animal drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, radiation-emitting products, biologics--are fit to use.   FedBizOps: Federal Business Opportunities - Portal for Federal government procurement opportunities over $25,000. Government buyers are able to publicize their business opportunities by posting information directly to FedBizOpps via the Internet. Commercial vendors seeking Federal markets for their products and services can search, monitor and retrieve opportunities solicited by the entire Federal contracting community.   Federal Bureau of Investigations - Principal investigative arm of the United States Department of Justice. Upholds the law through the investigation of violations of federal criminal law. Protects the United States from foreign intelligence and terrorist activities. Provides leadership and law enforcement assistance to federal, state, local, and international agencies.
  Federal Courts Websites - Each District or Circuit Court is responsible for disseminating their opinions. Many have published opinions on their websites.
  Federal Forms - Access federal forms by number, agency, or by name. Part of the General Services Administration's FirstGov.
  Federal Judiciary - U.S. District Courts and U.S. Courts of Appeals.
  Federal Register (1994-present) - Daily publication of  rules, proposed rules, and notices of federal agencies and organizations, as well as executive orders and other presidential documents.  See also the National Archive's page, which offers more explanation as to what the Federal Register and Code of Federal Regulations are.
  Federal Trade Commission - Enforces a variety of federal antitrust and consumer protection laws. The Commission seeks to ensure that the nation's markets function competitively, and are vigorous, efficient, and free of undue restrictions. The Commission also works to enhance the smooth operation of the marketplace by eliminating acts or practices that are unfair or deceptive.

  Foreign Agricultural Service - Part of the Agriculture Department, works to improve foreign market access for U.S. products. Operates programs designed to build new markets and improve the competitive position of U.S. agriculture in the global marketplace.
  Foreign Relations of the United States - Historical record of American foreign policy is produced by the State Department's Office of the Historian. First published in 1861, Foreign Relations of the United States preserves a key part of American history in more than 350 individual volumes. Each volume documents the major foreign policy decisions and diplomatic activity of the U.S. Government and contains declassified records from the White House, the State Department, and other foreign affairs agencies.
  Forest Service - Manages public lands in national forests and grasslands. The Forest Service is also the largest forestry research organization in the world, and provides technical and financial assistance to state and private forestry agencies. Part of the Agriculture Department.

  Frontiers, Argonne National Laboratory, Research Highlights - Annual publication of Argonne National Laboratory, covering basic science, energy resources, and environmental management.

  GAO Reports & Testimony (1975?-present) - Full text reports from the Government Accountability Office (formerly called the General Accounting Office). Commonly called the investigative arm of Congress or the congressional watchdog, GAO is independent and nonpartisan, and it studies how the federal government spends taxpayer dollars. GAO advises Congress and the heads of executive agencies (such as Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, Department of Defense, DOD, and Health and Human Services, HHS) about ways to make government more effective and responsive. GAO evaluates federal programs, audits federal expenditures, and issues legal opinions. When GAO reports its findings to Congress, it recommends actions. (Not all of the reports published between 1975-1980 are online.) You may keyword search GAO Reports back to 1995 via GPO Access.

  GPO Access  - Collection of databases to around 33 types of full text resources for law, legislation and the executive branch. Most of the databases are separated by individual years of coverage, so you can limit your search to a particular Congressional year. List of all the databases.   Grants.gov - Portal for organizations to electronically find and apply for competitive grant opportunities from over 900 grant programs from all 26 federal grant-making agencies. Keyword search or browse by type or date. Managed by the Department of Health and Human Services.
  GrayLit Network -  Portal for technical report information generated through federally funded research and development projects. Developed by the Energy Department's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI), in collaboration with DOD/DTIC, NASA, and EPA.
  Green Book or Background Material and Data on Programs Within the Jurisdiction of the House Committee on Ways and Means - Provides program descriptions and historical data on a wide variety of social and economic topics, including Social Security, employment, earnings, welfare, child support, health insurance, the elderly, families with children, poverty and taxation. Compiled every 2 to 4 years, available online back to 1996.

  Health and Human Services Department - Protects health and give a special helping hand to those who need assistance. Provides support and protection to older Americans, infants, and children. Provides aid to people with disabilities, as well as assistance and new opportunity for those in need. Responsible for public health in the United States. Supports the world's largest medical research effort. Assures the safety of foods and health care products. Fights against the ravages of drug and alcohol abuse.
  Health, United States - From the National Center for Health Statistics, data on the nature and extent of the health, illness, and disability of the U.S. population, as well as family formation, growth, and dissolution (marriages and divorces); and vital events (i.e., births and deaths).
  healthfinder® - Guide to reliable consumer health and human services information, developed by the Health and Human Services Department.  healthfinder® can lead you to selected online publications, clearinghouses, databases, websites, and support and self-help groups, as well as government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce reliable information for the public. Aimed at the general public.
  Hearings (1997-present) - Committee asked witnesses to testify on a subject. Not every hearing is available online.
  House of Representatives - Official website for the U.S. House of Representatives. Access schedules, roll call votes, member profiles, etc.
  House Rules & Manual - Fundamental source material for parliamentary procedure used in the House of Representatives. It is published during the first session of each Congress. Prior rules and precedents also available: Hinds' Precedents (1789-1907), Cannon's Precedents (1908-1936) and Deschler's Precendents (1936-1986).
  Homeland Security, Department of - Newest federal department charged with preventing terrorist attacks within the United States, reducing America's vulnerability to terrorism, and minimizing the damage from potential attacks and natural disasters. 22 agencies from other departments were merged, including the Coast Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Secret Service, Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (formerly Immigration & Naturalization Service or INS).

  Indicators Of School Crime and Safety - Crime at school from the perspectives of students, teachers, principals, and the general population from an array of sources that include: the National Crime Victimization Survey; the School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey; the Youth Risk Behavior Survey; and the School and Staffing Survey.   Internal Revenue Bulletin (1996-present) - Authoritative instrument of the Internal Revenue Service for announcing all substantive ruling necessary to promote a uniform application of tax law.
  Internal Revenue Service - Responsible for determining, assessing, and collecting internal revenue in the United States. This revenue consists of personal and corporate income taxes, excise, estate, and gift taxes, as well as employment taxes for the nation's Social Security system.
  International Energy Annual - Presents information and trends on world energy production and consumption for petroleum, natural gas, coal, and electricity, from the Energy Information Administration.
  International Trade Administration - Promotes world trade and to strengthen the international trade and investment position of the United States. Part of the Commerce Department.
  Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks - 200+ page annual report by the Environmental Protection Agency on estimates of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, including methodology and data used to calculate the estimates. Archive copies of the last 4 years, plus other publications on emissions.
