Portals & Multiple Agency Websites

  DisabilityInfo.gov - Portal to government information on civil rights, employment, housing, transportation, and other issues relevant to people with disabilities.
  Nutrition.gov - Portal to food and nutrition information from across the federal government. Managed by the Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) and the National Agricultural Library (NAL) in cooperation with a panel of food and nutrition expert advisors from agencies within United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
  www.health.gov - Portal to the websites of a number of multi-agency health initiatives and activities of the Health and Human Services Department and other Federal departments and agencies.  

Agencies

The federal agencies' websites are good starting points when looking for general information on a relevant topic, or when looking for specific information that you know the agency handles. Virtually all of the websites have a site index or a search engine, if you have difficulty navigating the site.

  Health and Human Services Department - Protects health and give a special helping hand to those who need assistance. Provides support and protection to older Americans, infants, and children. Provides aid to people with disabilities, as well as assistance and new opportunity for those in need. Responsible for public health in the United States. Supports the world's largest medical research effort. Assures the safety of foods and health care products. Fights against the ravages of drug and alcohol abuse.

Important Sub-Agencies

  Centers for Disease Control & Prevention - Provides a system of health surveillance to monitor and prevent outbreak of diseases. With the assistance of states and other partners, it guards against international disease transmission, maintains national health statistics and provides for immunization services and supports research into disease and injury prevention.
  Food & Drug Administration - Assures the safety of foods and cosmetics, and the safety and efficacy of pharmaceuticals, biological products and medical devices.
  National Center for Health Statistics - Principal vital and health statistics agency. Provides a wide variety of data with which to monitor the Nation's health. Part of the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.
  National Institutes of Health - With 17 separate institutes, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the world's premier medical research organization, supporting some 35,000 research projects nationwide in diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, arthritis, heart ailments and AIDS.

Other Agencies

  Center for Nutrition Policy & Promotion - Develops and coordinates nutrition policy within the Agriculture Department. Assesses the cost-effectiveness of government sponsored nutrition programs on food consumption, food expenditures, food-related behavior, and nutritional status. Prepares periodic updates on the cost of family food plans and of raising children. Investigates techniques for effective nutrition communication for Americans. Evaluates the Nutrient Content of the U.S. food supply.
  Food & Nutrition Service - Increases food security and reduces hunger in partnership with cooperating organizations by providing children and low-income people access to food, a healthful diet, and nutrition education in a manner that supports American agriculture and inspires public confidence. Part of the Agriculture Department.

Databases

  healthfinder® - Guide to reliable consumer health and human services information, developed by the Health and Human Services Department.  healthfinder® can lead you to selected online publications, clearinghouses, databases, websites, and support and self-help groups, as well as government agencies February 12, 2008 information for the public. Aimed at the general public.
  MEDLINEplus Health Information - Provides access to extensive information about specific diseases and conditions and also has web links to consumer health information from the National Institutes of Health, dictionaries, lists of hospitals and physicians, health information in Spanish and other languages, and clinical trials. Created by the National Library of Medicine. Aimed at health professionals and the general public.
  PubMed - Provides access to over 14 million journal citations back to 1950 on all aspects of medicine, as well as microbiology, nutrition, pharmacology, and environmental health. Can also search a number of other life sciences databases such as Nucleotide and Protein Sequences, Protein Structures, Complete Genomes, and Taxonomy.

Selected Publications

  Dietary Guidelines for Americans - Cornerstone of Federal nutrition policy and nutrition education activities. They are jointly issued by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services and updated every 5 years. The 6th edition was released in January 2005.
  Emerging Infectious Diseases - Peer-reviewed journal, issued 6 times a year, on tracking and analyzing disease trends.
  Environmental Health Perspectives - Monthly peer-reviewed journal for the latest environmental health research and information on topics ranging from molecular biology, ecology, and atmospheric physics to regulatory and public policy news and comment. Browse or search articles back to 1972.
  FDA Consumer - Official magazine of the Food and Drug Administration, published 6 times a year. FDA Consumer offers you a wealth of new and in-depth information on how to get healthy and stay healthy. Reports on current FDA activities to ensure that the products the agency regulates--food, human and animal drugs, medical devices, cosmetics, radiation-emitting products, biologics--are fit to use.   Food & Nutrition Research Briefs - Quarterly newsletter from the Agricultural Research Service. Browse or keyword search issues back to 1995.
  ICD.9.CM International Classification of Diseases - Used to code and classify morbidity data from the inpatient and outpatient records, physician offices, and most National Center for Health Statistics surveys.
  Medicare and You - Annual handbook on Medicare benefits, Medicare plan choices, Medicare health plans around the country, and where to call for help.

Statistics

  Health, United States - from the National Center for Health Statistics, data on the nature and extent of the health, illness, and disability of the U.S. population, as well as family formation, growth, and dissolution (marriages and divorces); and vital events (i.e., births and deaths).
