Government Information Online - Agriculture

Agencies

The federal agencies' websites are good starting points when looking for general information on a relevant topic, or when looking for specific information that you know the agency handles. Virtually all of the websites have a site index or a search engine, if you have difficulty navigating the site.

  Agriculture Department - Works to improve and maintain farm income and to develop and expand markets abroad for agricultural products. 

Important Sub-Agencies

  Agricultural Research Service - Conducts research to develop and transfer solutions to agricultural problems of high national priority.
  Economic Research Service - Inform and enhance public and private decisionmaking on economic and policy issues related to agriculture, food, natural resources, and rural development.
  National Agricultural Statistics Service - Conduct hundreds of surveys and prepare reports covering virtually every facet of U.S. agriculture -- production and supplies of food and fiber, prices paid and received by farmers, farm labor and wages, farm aspects of the industry.

Databases

  AGRICOLA - Two bibliographic databases (books and articles) of citations to the agricultural literature, covering all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences, created by the National Agricultural Library
  National Agricultural Statistics Service Database - Keyword search or browse by agricultural commodity the large collection of statistical reports and publications from this agency.

Selected Publications

  Agricultural Research Magazine - Department of Agriculture's science magazine, published monthly by the Agricultural Research Service. Online versions available back to 1996.
  Agriculture Fact Book - 300 page overview of the Agriculture Department and sub-agencies.
  Amber Waves: The Economics of Food, Farming, Natural Resources, and Rural America - Magazine published five times a year by the Economic Research Service, USDA.
  Soil Surveys - Official USDA soil information as viewable maps and tables for more than 2300 soil surveys, as well as information on historical soil surveys, how to use them, etc.

Statistics

  Agricultural Statistics - Annual compilation from the National Agricultural Statistics Service, with agricultural production and marketing data.
  Census of Agriculture - Count of all farms and production for those farms that produced more than $1000 worth of agricultural products. Data compiled for the nation, states and counties every 5 years. Access 2002, 1997, and 1992 censuses.
