Blackwell Reference Online -- full text to over 300 high quality, comprehensive encyclopedias, dictionaries and handbooks in the social sciences and humanties.

NetLibrary Reference Center -- full text to hundreds of current e-book encyclopedias, dictionaries, and handbooks on a variety of subjects

Sage eReference -- full text to dozens of high quality, comprehensive reference works covering the social sciences and some humanities.

World Almanac -- quick facts and statistics from four almanacs and the Funk & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia, back to 1998

 

Biographies

American National Biography -- biographical entries on over 18,000 famous Americans including portraits, background, accomplishments, etc. Note: Does not include figures who are alive.

Biographies Plus -- full text biographical information about over 110,000 famous people from all over the world from hundreds of reference books, including Current Biography.

Biography & Genealogy Master Index -- index to biographical dictionaries and "Who's Who" type books; useful for September 7, 2007 ntry on a particular person

 

Directories

Associations Unlimited -- directory of over 160,000 international and U.S. national, regional, state, and local nonprofit membership organizations in all fields and industries

Database of Pubs./Broadcast Media -- directory of newspapers, radio stations, TV stations and other media outlets

 

Book Reviews

Academic Search Premier -- Useful for finding scholarly and nonscholarly book reviews. Search hints - The book title is one of the subject headings given the record with (book) after the title, and the abstract usually says Reviews [name of book] by [name of author]. You can either search the subject headings by clicking on the green Subjects button, or simply type in unique words from the title and the author, and the word reviews.

Expanded Academic ASAP -- Useful for finding scholarly and nonscholarly book reviews. Search hints - The book title is always part of the title of the article along with (book review). In contrast to Academic Search Premier, the title is not one of the subject headings given the book. Therefore, type in unique words from the title and the author, and the phrase "book review."

LexisNexis Academic -- Useful for finding nonscholarly (newspaper and magazine) book reviews. Click on Guided News Search; then choose Arts & Sports for the first box, then Book, movie, music & play reviews in the second box to narrow specifically to reviews. However, in this subset there are only 17 sources covered, so if you don't find a review for your book, try under General News or US News in the first box for content from more newspapers and magazines.

PsycCRITIQUES -- Book and film reviews from the journal Contemporary Psychology, back to 1995

Web of Science -- Useful for finding book reviews from scholarly journals. Click on General Search. Type in unique words from the title and the last name of the author in the box labeled Topic, then scroll down and in the Set Search Limits boxes highlight Book Review in the Document Type pull-down menu.

 

Dictionaries

Middle English Dictionary -- electronic version of the Middle English Dictionary, a hyperbibliography of Middle English prose and verse and associated network of electronic resources

Oxford English Dictionary Online -- full text, online version of most comprehensive dictionary of the English language, with definitions and contextual examples of usage, including the first written usage

 

Encyclopedias

AccessScience -- full text access to the McGraw-Hill's Encyclopedia of Science & Technology, Yearbooks of Science & Technology, and Dictionary of Scientific & Technical Terms, as well as biographical information, news articles, and recommended websites

Encyclopædia Britannica -- contains full text articles from Encyclopædia Britannica, Britannica Student Encyclopedia (aimed at middle and high school students), and Britannica Elementary Encyclopedia; also includes 200,000 hand-picked websites and 2,000 videos

Funk & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia -- over 25,000 encyclopedic entries covering a variety of subject areas; updated annually

 

Grants

Foundation Directory Online Professional on-campus only! -- It provides access to three searchable databases: Foundation Search allows you to keyword search a collection of over 80,000 foundations, corporate giving programs, and grantmaking public charities; and Grants Search database allows you to search the brief records of over 500,000 grants awarded by foundations; and the 990 search provides search capability to the over 230,000 Forms 990 for all private and public grantmaking organizations in the Professional database. Foundation Directory Online Professional is updated on a weekly basis.

Foundation Grants to Individuals Online (GTIO) on-campus only! -- provides detailed descriptions of more than 6,000 foundation programs that fund students, artists, researchers, and other individual grantseekers.

Grants.gov - The White House Office of Management and Budget has mandated that all 26 Federal agencies post their competititve grant opportunities here to facilitate ease in locating grants as well as downloading and submitting applications.  Managed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the aim of this site is to eventually become the central repository for federal grant information.

Illinois Funding Source on-campus only! -- includes two powerful tools for determining who is getting grants in Illinois: FunderSource, a searchable directory of 2800+ Illinois Foundations; and who is receiving Illinois funding: GrantSource, an essential research database that indexes over $3.2 billion in grants dollars awarded by local funders.

Lesson Plans

Educator's Reference Desk -- The Educator's Reference Desk builds on the historical resources and services that educators have come to rely on from AskERIC and GEM.  Synthesizing these resources with the combined efforts of the Information Institute of Syracuse and the Virtual Reference Desk, the Educator's Reference Desk provides 2,000+ lesson plans, 3,000+ links to online education information, and 200+ question archive responses.

Maps

Digital Sanborn Maps on-campus only! -- black and white fire insurance maps of Illinois communities for the years between the years 1867 and 1970

Polls/Public Opinion

Gallup Brain -- keyword search or browse through Gallup Poll results, back to 1935

LexisNexis Academic -- full text poll and survey data from Gallup, Harris, Roper, and various news organizations back to 1935, compiled by the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. To access, click on News on the upper left hand side, then choose Roper Center for Public Opinion Research in the far right hand column.

Pew Research Center for the People and the Press -- independent opinion research group that studies attitudes toward the press, politics and public policy issues. Their web site includes surveys and survey reports, as well as data sets going back as far as 1997.

ICPSR (Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research) -- Established in 1962, ICPSR is the world's largest archive of digital social science data. UIS is an institutional member of the ICPSR.

LexisNexis Statistical -- large database for finding statistical information. Power Tables covers 25,000 statistical tables on a variety of topics, and Abstracts covers state, federal and international statistical information published since 1970.

Statistical Abstract of the U.S -- The Statistical Abstract of the United States, published since 1878, is the authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States. Sources of data include the Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and many other Federal agencies and private organizations.

U.S. Census -- Population, economic & industry data collected by the U.S. government.

 

Tests & Instruments

Health & Psychosocial Instruments -- indexes health and psychological tests, surveys and instruments, back to 1985

Mental Measurements Yearbook -- contains full text information about and reviews of English-language standardized tests covering educational skills, personality, vocational aptitude, psychology, and related areas; covers the 9th edition of the Yearbook to the latest one, or 1985-present
