In compliance with the Agreement on the Guidelines for Classroom
Photocopying in Not-for-Profit Educational Institutions with Respect
to Books and Periodicals (H. R. 94-1476) and Section 107: Fair
Use (Title 17, U.S. Code) of the Copyright Act of 1976 the following
policy will be applied to copyrighted photocopied materials to be
place on reserve.
Materials which may be placed on reserve without obtaining copyright
permission:
- Exams
- Lecture notes
- Virtually all Government publications (there are exceptions)
Portions of copyrighted materials that may be photocopied or
scanned and placed on electronic reserve:
- A chapter from a book.
- An article from a periodical or a newspaper
- A short story, essay or short poem
- A chart, graph, diagram, drawing, cartoon or picture from a
book, periodical or newspaper
Copyrighted materials that may not be photocopied or scanned
and placed on reserve:
- Pages from works intended to be "consumable" in course of study
or teaching. These include workbooks, exercises, standardized
tests, test booklets and answer sheets.
- An entire book, whether in-print or out-of-print (electronic
reserves only)
Length of time photocopied/scanned materials may be on reserve:
Photocopies of copyrighted materials may be placed on reserve
for one semester only without permission. If the instructor wishes
to keep these materials on reserve for more than one consecutive
semester, permission from the copyright holder must be requested.
Once the request has been made the material can remain on reserve
pursuant to the copyright holder's response. If permission is
not granted than the material must be taken off reserve. (The
library will make the request for permission if needed)
When copyright permission is needed:
- When a journal article, book chapter or a portion of a work
is on reserve for consecutive semesters.
- When multiple articles from one issue of a journal are needed
for reserve during the same semester.
- When multiple chapters from a book are needed during one semester.
Additional Guidelines for UIS Electronic Course Reserve:

Access to the documents in course reserve will be limited
to faculty and students registered in each course.
- The following copyright warning will appear on each copyrighted
documents:
WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United
state Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproduction
of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified
in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish
a photocopy or other reproductions. One of these specified conditions
is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used for
any other purpose other than private study, scholarship, or
research. If electronic transmission of reserve material is
used for purposes in excess of what constitutes "fair use",
that user may be liable for copyright restrictions or permission
has been granted by the publisher.

Material on electronic reserve will be accessed by course number,
professor name and document title.

At the end of each semester, all material on electronic reserve
will be removed unless it does not fall under copyright restrictions
or permission has been granted by the publisher. In the case
of students with incompletes the instructor must notify the
circulation staff to extend access to those needed course materials.
