Online Databases

UIS has access to over 100 online databases.Through these databases, you can browse and search thousands of electronic journals, conference proceedings, book reviews, and much more!

You must be a student, staff, or faculty in good standing to access the UIS databases. Remember to turn off your firewalls, pop-up blockers, and other security software as you log in. You may always reactivate these features once you are in.

Books Owned by UIS

Your I-Card is your library card. In order to check items out from the University of Illinois at Springfield's Brookens Library, you will need an I-Card. Similarly, you will need an I-Card to request items held at libraries other than UIS. If you have questions about getting an I-Card, please contact the I-Card Office.

UIS owns over 500,000 books including monographs on specific research subjects, popular fiction, and works of general interest. Use UIS's online catalog, PrairieCat, to see if UIS owns the book you want. If UIS has the book, you may pick it up (if you live within 50 miles of Springfield) or have it mailed to you.

Please phone or email Access Services (217-206-6605; lib-circ@uis.edu) to make arrangements to have UIS books sent to you.

Books Not Owned by UIS

Despite the outstanding collection of items at Brookens Library, UIS probably will not have every book you want. Two other places to search for books are the I-Share catalog and WorldCat.

The I-Share catalog lists the holdings of over 70 Illinois libraries that participate in a lending consortium with UIS. If you want to borrow a book from an I-Share library, click the "Request" button at the top of the screen within the record for that item.

If you find a book in WorldCat (for UIS students/staff) that you want, click the "Borrow this item from another library" link within the record for that item.

If you live in Illinois near a library that participates in CARLI, I-Share, or the Sangamon Valley Academic Library Consortium you may use your I-Card to check out books from that library. Please note that you will not have access to that library's electronic resources. A list of Illinois libraries from which you can check out books is below.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

UIS has a lot of data and information in its print and electronic collections. However, you might find some piece of information that we don't own that you want for your research. Only students, staff, and faculty in good standing at UIS are allowed to use ILL and Document Delivery Service (DDS).
