The Norris L. Brookens Library at the University of Illinois at Springfield seeks a creative, energetic, service-oriented individual to fill the position of Associate Professor/Director of Collections Services. Reporting to the University Librarian and working collaboratively with colleagues, the individual in this position will be responsible for managing collection development, collection management, and acquisitions functions including: development of policies and procedures, coordination of the activities of liaison librarians related to collection development, negotiation of license agreements, management of the materials budget, assessment of the collections, and serving as primary contact for collections activities carried out through consortia. This position will supervise Acquisitions staff, provide liaison services to faculty, and work with the campus community on issues relating to scholarly communication.
Tasks and Responsibilities
Collection Development: In addition to the basic functions described above:
- Collaborates with the Budget Officer (Dean’s Assistant) and the Library Dean to develop and maintain oversight of the library materials budget.
- Monitors the approval plan, making changes to the profile as necessary.
- Serves as primary contact for the serials subscription agent
- Works with the Manager of Access Services on issues relating to space for the collections.
- Leads special projects relating to the collections, including assessment and de-selection projects.
- Consults with assigned departments on needs relating to the curriculum and research.
- Selects materials in assigned subject areas, coordinating with other Instructional Services librarians in areas of disciplinary overlap.
- Works with university Purchasing Office for contracts and licenses
- Serves as gifts officer for the Library.
Acquisitions: Manages the Acquisitions Department in the prompt and cost effective procurement and management of collection materials.
- Sets strategic direction, including effective utilization of technology and operational enhancements, to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the department
- Supervises four FTE Acquisitions staff and department policies, workflow, operations, and services
- Hires, trains, and evaluates staff of the Acquisitions Department
- Serves as primary vendor contact and collaborates with Director of Bibliographic Services to monitor vendor performance
- Manages departmental budgets
- Leads the department to provide appropriate collection management support including accurately encumbering funds, invoicing receipts, reconciling expenditures, and generating financial, statistical, and narrative reports
- Communicates and coordinates as appropriate with library units/departments to maintain efficient and cost-effective workflow and to provide excellent service
- Evaluates training needs for the staff and arranges for appropriate training programs
- Prepares and monitors requests for book and periodical services
- Teams with Director of Bibliographic Services to monitor bindery processes
- Maintains working knowledge of systems relating to Acquisitions, coordinates with Director of Bibliographic Services (systems administrator) for system enhancements related to Acquisitions
- Serves as library fiscal officer in dean’s absence
Instruction and Consultation: Promotes the effective use of information resources to advance teaching, learning, and research.
- Conducts library research workshops for specific courses or groups, teaching users how to find information using library resources and the Web.
- Prepares research guides, web pages, course software modules and other instructional aids.
- Upon request, provides consultation or instruction for individuals in academic departments within areas of liaison responsibility
- Partners with OTEL, ITS and other campus units to facilitate faculty use of library information and technology.
- May teach a section of library research methods course or other courses offered by the library.
Liaison: Partners with academic departments, research centers and UIS administrative offices to discern their needs and to market library resources and services. Serves as library resource person on matters relating to scholarly communication; works with campus community on scholarly communication issues.
Professional Activities: Maintains an active knowledge of librarianship and contributes to the profession through:
- Participation in professional organizations and conferences at the local, state, regional or national level
- Scholarship as defined in the Faculty Handbook, Article 3.
Other Activities: Assumes special responsibilities as assigned by the Library Dean.
Qualifications
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school program or its equivalent; at least three years of relevant post-MLS experience in an academic or research library, library network or consortium, showing progressive responsibility in the area of collection development, including management of materials budgets, vendor contacts and liaison with academic departments, knowledge of collection development issues and trends, especially relating to electronic resources; ability to contribute in a collaborative instructional services environment; excellent analytical, organizational, and oral and written communication skills. Knowledge of current standards and practices in acquisitions and working knowledge of integrated library systems. Knowledge of current issues and trends in scholarly communication. Desirable: Experience in reference and instruction, knowledge of collection assessment techniques.
The University of Illinois at Springfield: Located in the state capital, the University of Illinois at Springfield is one of three campuses of the University of Illinois. The UIS Brookens Library will be the library services provider for the University of Illinois Global Campus Partnership, a totally online educational initiative of the University of Illinois, to be launched in January, 2008.
Appointment: Twelve-month appointment as an Associate Professor with additional administrative appointment.
Compensation and Benefits: Benefits include 24 days annual leave, 25 days sick leave, nine state holidays, two floating holidays, and a choice of health and retirement plans. An H-1B visa is required for any non-U.S. citizen prior to employment. Salary range of $45,000-$60,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
